We’ve been told that Boruto’s Karma is Momoshiki’s, however I think we’ve been misled. I believe Momoshiki utilized the power of the Karma to obtain the body of Shibai by making a White Karma from Shibai and then injected his (Momoshiki’s) soul into the Karma to make it a completed Karma.
Explaining the Karma
The White Karma is considered to be a dud Karma. It doesn’t contain the soul data and is incomplete. Code is the only character in the series with a White Karma and it’s very powerful on its own. The Karma is basically a seal with data, a backup of DNA and the soul of an Otsutsuki. Karma recipients can have a Karma fully transfer its data into the host, but until the Karma giver dies, the soul itself will not implant itself but the data is there. However, once the giver dies, that soul is immediately transferred. In regards to Code, he doesn’t have soul data at all, but he does have partial genetic data. It’s likely his Karma stopped progressing at the point where the soul data attempted to be written into Code thus he doesn’t have the full genetic dataset. We can look to Boruto as an example where the soul could potentially emerge even though his Karma wasn’t completed. So these two factors of the Karma are intertwined.
How/Why Momoshiki could pull this off
For Momoshiki, modifying the Karma should be relatively trivial. Shibai is “dead”, his body existed and the soul detached itself. Shibai’s body exists or existed for Isshiki and Amado to utilize for the Cyborgs to gain Shinjutsu. However, Momoshiki is extremely knowledgable even amongst his clan. He claims to be aware of every known Shinjutsu and seems to be very knowledgable of Shibai himself. The Karma is integral for Otsutsuki’s to grow stronger and expand their clan. Momoshiki knowing how to abuse the Karma for his own goals isn’t crazy to think about. I personally believe he utilized the dead body of Shibai to obtain his White Karma then Momoshiki injected his own soul data into that Karma.
